The history of Edgefield Baptist Church is an interesting one. It all began in 1870, directly after the Civil War, when a few Christian ex-slaves decided to organize a church. The first sermon was preached on a large rock. Later, services were held under a brush arbor approximately one hundred feet from the rock. Some years later, after the donation of an acre of land, the members built a church off of Highway 54 in Fayetteville, Georgia at the edge of a field. That is how the church received its current name, “EDGEFIELD”. The above is only a sampling of the history of Edgefield Baptist Church. The complete history is long and rich. God is doing a great work in Edgefield. “Eyes hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.” (I Corinthians 2:9)
